PraeVeni: Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in Children

We have all heard stories of healthy kids collapsing and later learning an undiagnosed heart condition contributed to the tragic event. No family or community should experience the loss of a healthy child!

The good news is the majority of heart conditions have early risk features that can be identified and corrected in order to prevent a tragedy.

PraeVeni SBC is a new heart screening center near Shady Oak Road and Hwy 212 in Eden Prairie MN. We work with community organizations, schools, athletic associations, and expert Cardiologists to prevent SCD in young people. PraeVeni is a Specific Benefit Corporation that exists to benefit and provide peace of mind to families and communities alike.

PraeVeni’s friendly and professional staff administer a state-of-the-art Focused Echocardiographic Screening Test (FEST)™ for young participants (ages 5-25). The test affirms the NORMAL state of heart features known to be associated with SCD and which don’t show up during a standard physical exam.

PraeVeni has screened over 3,500 youth and have ruled-out abnormalities for all but 2 percent of participants, a ratio consistent with that of the general population. The screening test is simple and affordable… and can have a positive impact on you and your children for a lifetime!

The Problem: Incidence of SCD Have Not Declined

Heart abnormalities often have NO symptoms

3 in every 100 kids have an undiagnosed heart condition

Standard physical exams miss 96% of the risks associated with heart conditions

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the #1 killer of student athletes

The #2 cause of death for youth under age 25 is SCA

Our children receive preventive care in the form of eye exams, immunization shots, and dental cleanings… why not preventive heart checks?

SCA happens without warning and is often diagnosed after it occurs. Symptom-free kids rarely have preventive heart checks due to the lack of symptoms and high costs of common diagnostic tests (ECG, diagnostic echo, stress test, CT Scan, MRI) being used as a screening tool.

The number of SCD’s have not declined over the last 20 years. Heart disease slowly emerges over long periods of time – it does not occur overnight. The first symptom is often SCA or death, even though the emerging risk features are identifiable much earlier. Waiting to diagnose and treat a symptom is not effective in preventing tragic cardiac events in our children.

Diagnostic tests are not recommended for screening in the U.S. because of the high percentage of false interpretations and high costs.

It is a social imperative to screen symptom-free kids to detect and manage emerging risk features long before they become dangerous. Most identifiable heart conditions can be corrected or managed.

Diagnostic Test: Used to diagnose a SYMPTOM to establish the presence or absence of a disease

Screening Test: Used to identify early RISK FEATURES to allow early intervention.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is not recommended as a screening test by the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, or the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

FEST: Finding Emerging Risk Features to Prevent SCD

“At the beginning a disease is easy to cure but difficult to diagnose; but as time passes, not having been treated or recognized at the outset, it becomes easy to diagnose but difficult to cure” - Niccolò Machiavelli [1469 – 1527]

It is time for a fundamentally new screening test. The state-of-the-art Focused Echocardiographic Screening Test (FEST)™ provides early detection of heart conditions in symptom-free people.

Risk features associated with SCD have various structural, functional, hemodynamic, angiographic and electrical features. An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) is uniquely capable of seeing inside the body, using sound waves to create images and to evaluate the various features.

PraeVeni’s FEST™ includes a Risk Assessment Questionnaire, blood pressure check, and an echocardiogram designed to unequivocally affirm heart and blood vessel features are NORMAL and rule-out ABNORMAL. The FEST™ affirms normal findings for:

  • Risk Assessment Questionnaire
  • Heart Chambers
  • Diastolic and Systolic Function
  • Coronary Arteries
  • Right Ventricular Outflow Size
  • Left atrial volume
  • Blood Pressure
  • Aorta
  • Aortic Blood Flow
  • Pulmonary Pressure
  • Valves: Aortic, Mitral, and Pulmonary
  • Features of a “Normal Athletic Heart”

What happens if a feature cannot be affirmed as NORMAL? A Cardiologist Advisor will review the FEST™ results and provide a phone consult at no additional charge.

By providing test information and a phone consult to parents, appropriate follow up action can be taken to prevent abnormal features from becoming more dangerous. In most cases, early detection can lead to corrective actions that will allow the child to live a normal life.

Each $99 screening test takes just 15-minutes and participants will receive their confidential results prior to leaving the PraeVeni screening center.

The FEST™ unequivocally rules-out >95% of known SCD risk associations:

  • Cardiomyopathies (Hypertrophic, Dilated, Restrictive, Hypertensive, Myocarditis, Sarcoidosis, etc.)
  • Structural deformities (Bicuspid Aortic Valve, Aneurysm, Valves, Congenital heart disease, etc.)
  • Hemodynamic features (Coarctation, Pulmonary Hypertension, etc.)
  • Abnormal Angiographic features (valve regurgitation, shunts, etc.)
